How to Measure Yourself

1
Measuring the bust

Bust

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it parallel to the floor. Skip the padded bra — you want your natural shape.

Common mistake: letting the tape dip lower at the back than the front. Check in a mirror, or have someone help.
2
Measuring under the bust

Under Bust

Measure directly under your bust, where a bra band sits. This helps with the fit through the ribcage, especially for corset-back gowns.

Common mistake: pulling the tape too tight. It should sit snugly, not compress your ribs.
3
Measuring the waist

Waist

Find your natural waistline — the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Relax; don't suck in.

Common mistake: measuring at the belly button instead of the natural waist. Bend gently to the side — the crease that forms marks your true waistline.
4
Measuring the hips

Hips

Stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and rear, typically 7–9 inches below your waist.

Common mistake: keeping the tape level at the front but letting it ride up at the back. Check all the way around.
5
Measuring hollow to hem

Hollow to Hem

Measure from the small hollow between your collarbones straight down to where you'd like the hemline to fall.

Common mistake: measuring barefoot when you plan to wear heels. Wear the shoes (or the heel height) you'll wear on the day.
6
Measuring height

Height

Stand barefoot against a wall and measure from the top of your head straight down to the floor.

Common mistake: measuring in shoes, or with your head tilted forward. Look straight ahead, shoulders relaxed.
